The United States au pair program is a cultural exchange program. In addition to the benefits of sharing cultures with the host family, and establishing relationships with and meeting and getting to know the host family and their friends and relatives, there are other benefits  

Au Pair Benefits

 

Benefits
Host Family Stay: Live with a family for 12 months, with the option to extend 6, 9, or 12 more months.
Professional Training: Receive a minimum of 32 hours of childcare training before you start.
Childcare Experience: Provide up to 10 hours a day/45 hours a week of childcare.
School Credit: Complete at least six hours of academic credit or equivalent in formal educational settings at an accredited U.S. post-secondary educational institution.
Financial Value: Receive up to $500 toward the cost of required academic course work. Room and board plus compensation for childcare work.

Live in the U.S.: Live with a host family for 12 months, with the option to extend 6, 9, or 12 months.

Professional Training: All au pairs receive at least 32 hours of childcare training before they start their stay with the host family.

Childcare Experience: Au Pairs gain experience providing up to 10 hours a day/45 hours a week of childcare. Au Pairs cannot be required to work more hours per day or more hours per week.

School Credit: Au pairs are required to complete at least six hours of academic credit at an accredited U.S. post-secondary educational institution. For Educare, this requirement is 12 units.

Financial Value: All au pairs receive up to $500 toward the cost of school ($1,000 for Educare). Au pairs are given room and board for one year plus at least $195.75/week for their childcare work ($146.81 for Educare).

Cultural Exchange: The cultural exchange component of the au pair program is very important, and au pairs will share their culture and language with their American host family, and the family will share their culture and language with the au pair.
